Mariposa Grove Restoration
Project Overview:
Martin Brothers Construction (MBC) successfully completed the Mariposa Grove Restoration project, a comprehensive initiative to repurpose roads, install underground utilities, remove and repave pavement, and construct new transit and parking facilities. This project aimed to enhance visitor experience and protect the natural environment of Mariposa Grove, home to ancient giant sequoias.

Mariposa Grove Repurpose Road and Related Work Activities

Scope of Work:
-
Mobilization and Site Preparation: Efficient mobilization to/from the job site, including setting up and maintaining temporary National Park Service (NPS) and contractor trailers.
-
Installation of Underground Utilities: Comprehensive installation of water utilities and septic systems, including septic tanks, sewer piping, and leachfield utilities in the lower Grove area and along Mariposa Grove Road.
-
Site Management: Implementation of staking and layout plans, as well as Storm Water Pollution Prevention Plan (SWPPP) measures to ensure environmental compliance.
Outcome:
MBC's meticulous approach ensured that all underground utility installations were completed seamlessly, preparing the site for further development while safeguarding the surrounding ecosystem.

Pavement Removal, Site Clearing, and Mariposa Road Paving

Scope of Work:
-
Pavement Removal and Site Clearing: Removal of existing pavement and site clearing in the lower Grove area parking lot and road, including the upper Grove area loop road. Approximately 10% of the existing asphalt was removed using methods approved to protect the sequoias' exposed roots.
-
New Paving: Paving of Mariposa Road within the bypass road and the Grizzly Giant parking lot.
-
Materials Management: Clearing and grubbing, stump removal, and stockpiling of asphalt pavement, duff, and topsoil within designated areas in the park. Excavation, grading, and installation of road base and asphalt were meticulously executed to create a durable and sustainable roadway.

Outcome:
The site was cleared efficiently, with careful attention to the preservation of the giant sequoias. The new pavement provides a smooth and reliable surface, enhancing accessibility and safety for visitors.

Lower Grove Area Transit Plaza, Bypass Road, and Grizzly Giant Parking Lot

Scope of Work:
-
Transit Plaza and Parking Lot Construction: Construction of the lower Grove area shuttle loop and parking lot, including paving, drainage, concrete curbs, and rock walls. Rough grading and base installation for a future pedestrian plaza were also completed.
-
Bypass Road Construction: Excavation, grading, road base installation, compaction, and asphalt paving of the bypass road.
-
Grizzly Giant Parking Lot and Turnaround Loop: Excavation, grading, road base installation, compaction, rock walls installation, and asphalt paving were performed to construct the Grizzly Giant parking lot and turnaround loop.
-
Vault Toilet Installation: A new prefabricated vault toilet was installed to enhance visitor amenities.

Outcome:
The construction of the lower Grove area transit plaza, bypass road, and Grizzly Giant parking lot significantly improved visitor flow and accessibility. The new facilities blend seamlessly with the natural surroundings, providing functional and aesthetic benefits to the park.

Overall Project Outcome:
The Mariposa Grove Restoration project by Martin Brothers Construction was a resounding success, enhancing infrastructure while preserving the natural beauty and ecological integrity of Yosemite National Park. The careful planning and execution of each phase ensured minimal environmental impact and maximum benefit for park visitors and the local ecosystem.
